This workshop will cover historic paint composition and application; the variety and chemical evolution of paint films; the causes of paint failure and repair techniques. The will study samples of painted wood showing intercoat peeling, and others showing varying degrees of alligatoring and total loss of surface film, photomicrographs of paint samples for color (and composition) analysis accompanied by old painted wood that will be “cratered” to reveal the underlying coats of paint.
